I do a workshop on time management, and in it, I present the radical idea that multitasking as a way to be more efficient (and as a concept itself) is a myth. In reality, we are shifting attention from one thing to another and back again, and losing time and energy by doing so. I am always fighting the tendency myself at work, and find that I love my job when I am focused on one thing at a time, which allows me to be “in the flow”, to do creative work as well as what are usually considered mind-numbing tasks.
Thanks. “Multi-tasking is a moral weakness,” usually gets a laugh in a business presentation setting. But many a true word was spoken in jest.
I suppose on one level it is impossible not to multi-task, depending on what you term task. For example, you could be sitting down and reading. We men are rumored to have difficulty walking and chewing gum. I’ve never actually tried it but it probably is difficult.
The point about not multi-tasking is focus, being present and in the now. You might get a kick out of purchasing a few of these mugs and giving one a way as a prize for answering a correct question. You’ll probably increase your audience’s attention rate.
Great article!
